XC Log - Day 20: "Look at all those grapes!"

Is everyone getting sick of us yet? Not to worry, we’re nearly home...

Our penultimate day started with a fantastic breakfast at a spot called, Katy’s Place. Food was great and the restaurant had that comfortable air about it where every other person looked familiar.

True, it could have been packed with out-of-work actors...look, all I know is the guy in the corner reading the newspaper was absolutely not Richard Jenkins, but he was somebody...

We drove the coastline, admiring the fairy-tale houses on cliffs overlooking a greenish-blue ocean.

Eventually, the road south led us inland and we chose to stay off the 101 and instead took Monterey County Road G16 that noodled around pastures and zig-zagged through rural bliss.

The goal was DAOU Vineyards and Winery, just outside of Paso Robles.

We were introduced to a DAOU cabernet in Providence and, as luck would have it, their vineyard was on our way home.

Perched atop a hill in the Santa Lucia Range, the views from DAOU were astounding.

We didn’t have a reservation, but still somehow managed celebrity seating under a big tree at the edge of the world.

It was such a peaceful afternoon with a light breeze, exceptional wine, and a charcuterie board that was beyond delicious...but the best part was David getting admonished by our German “Wine Educator” because he rinsed his glass out with water. David-the-Barbarian.

We rounded off the day with martinis at The Madonna Inn with good friends, Dave and Maggie, who live nearby. Steven and Nancy had never before had the pleasure of experiencing their eyes and souls burn with the mere sight of those interiors. Cheers!

The final night of the trip was spent at the Cliffs Hotel in Pismo Beach; the Pacific waves crashing below our corner room patio, lulling us to sleep.
