We are water seekers. And what a brilliant day on Lake Shasta!
The sun dragged us out of our air mattress nest around 8AM and there was already fresh coffee brewing downstairs in the kitchen.
Everyone lazed about, existing together as if we’d all known each other our entire lives…as it tends to go on the water…and when surrounded by good people.
It’s amazing how these guys can go from zero to 90, in every way, just by stepping from the houseboat to the speed boat.
It wasn’t long before we were off in Mark’s boat to watch some absolutely ridiculous acrobatics on the Sky Ski. Mike, Mark, and Chris all put on a clinic, catching big air and landing impossible twisting flips!
This way of extreme sports life on Shasta Lake is slightly different than that on Little Sebago Lake and the big smiles plastered on Steven, Nancy, and David’s faces easily gave away their pure excitement.
A quick stop back at the houseboat for sandwiches and we were all back out on the speed boats, motoring underneath the I-5 bridge and on to the Shasta dam. It was 200° and the perfect time to jump in the water and float with a cold one.
On the way back, it was decided that after watching the professionals work their magic on the Sky Ski, it would be reasonable and awfully entertaining for everyone to watch me give it a try…
I was quite content to just sit in the boat and not die, but after some probing sarcasm and major guilt trips, I agreed to be strapped into that monster and dragged behind the boat.
Mike was great and provided crystal clear instruction on how to “get up” on the ski, all of which promptly left my brain as soon as I heard myself yell, “Ready!!!"
I was not ready.
And she’s down. I didn’t even get up and I was down.
It took a half dozen tries for me to finally get up and out of the water and even then, I lasted maybe four seconds. What a thrill!
After a few semi-successes and a number of awesome face-plants, it was time to throw in the towel and make martinis…thank God.
It was so very kind of those gentleman to take the time to teach me how to Sky Ski…it really is so cool (just not when I do it)!
Steven was pumped to be able to cook a meal “at sea” and made a delicious dinner of pasta and shrimp for the boat…after which everyone immediately crashed for another night of spectacular stargazing.
On an audible, we departed early today and are heading to Carmel, CA.
It was really tough to say goodbye to the houseboat crew. I promise it won’t be another 15 years between visits. Yogi, Mark, and Audra, thank you so much for having us!
