Yesterday was the perfect tweener day and I enraptured the group with a tour of my own personal, historical, Klamtucky landmarks: former residences, schools, and other local places of note.
They were thrilled…!!!
We kicked the day off with breakfast at The Klamath Grill with the one and only Bobby Thompson.
It was comforting to see the walls are still littered with old Western movie six-sheets and I was equally pleased to see an abundance of familiar faces: Randall Paul, Denny Thomas, and Mr. Baseball.
Bobby updated us on all the scores for the week and he and Steven went head-to-head with Mets trivia before we parted ways.
We walked around downtown Klamath so Steven could revel in ghost sign heaven and ran right into a cheerful Mike Moore on Main St. There really is an abundance of interesting neon signage, murals, and historic painted signs downtown and it was fun to see it all through new eyes.
I do have one gripe for you people…what is with the absolute discombobulation that is the blinking yellow and red-light situation downtown? Why, who, what happened?!
Okay, moving on…obligatory tour stops included Roosevelt Elementary School, Ponderosa Junior High School, Klamath Union High School, Pacific Terrace, and Oregon Tech.
We drove by the Howdy Doody Tavern because the name has always amused me, but I’m still afraid to set foot past that threshold and Steven had his pink shorts on again, so…hard pass…
At OIT, we ran into Mike Garrard and Greg Stewart and they gave us a tour of the beautiful new athletic facilities up there…awesome!!
Greg hooked us all up with Tech t-shirts that sport the original Hustlin’ Owl logo, which is so goofy, it’s cool, and I’m pleased they’re bringing it back.
One last stop at Kiger Stadium because I’m traveling with sports fans and Kiger is the only remaining completely wooden stadium west of the Mississippi. We got a good look at it from the bike path and didn’t even get mugged!
Dinner and drinks with friends topped off the day of reminiscing and poking fun at me for still knowing everyone in town.
It was a very, very good day.
