I find that you always get the best rest after a day on the water and boy, did we sleep hard in our swanky Running Y suite.
It was time for a slow day and we took one.
There was a lot of moseying, meandering, and sipping coffee on the patio before we got our act together and decided to try our hand at the driving range down the road.
The Running Y golf course was designed by Arnold Palmer and considered one of his Sweet 16 (one of his favorites). Now, I do not profess to be even a mediocre golfer, but I do enjoy taking a few swings every now and then, closely following the Tin Cup theory of “grip it and rip it”.
For the most part, we had the driving range all to ourselves, likewise with the putting green. My ball seemed to be afraid of the dark, but I eventually sank a few...
Now, for whatever reason, David and Nancy have been talking about axe throwing for the past few years. Well folks, today was their lucky day... Crater Lake Zipline and Axe Throwing, here we come!
Again, we had the place to ourselves because everyone else was “in the trees”. We ordered some lunch and a few Deschutes IPA’s; alcohol and axes are a match made in heaven.
After a safety briefing which was summed up by our friendly expert as, “Just don’t be stupid...”, we took a few practice throws to find which of the three axe options would best fit each of us.
You don’t choose the axe, the axe chooses you. Pretty sure that’s how it goes...
Many laughs were had trying to figure out the most effective technique for the perfect throw and we got the hang of it rather quickly.
Since none of us are competitive at all, we naturally developed our own intimidation strategy and my favorite was Steven’s pre-throw warm up of kicking the gravel around like a bull preparing to charge...
Although, David’s final throw was a mind-boggling masterpiece that deserves mentioning...!
After we had our fill of axes, we returned to the trusty patio for appetizers, martinis, and a stunning sunset over the Cascades that only Klamath can provide.
