Pit stop number two: Eastern Standard Time and Elkhart, Indiana.
714 miles.
Similar drill as the night before with a quick freshen-up and off to find sustenance...which was an easy pick based on the name alone.
We waltzed into The Chubby Trout and discovered the label was shinier than its contents, but no one left unhappy.
Back to the hotel, then up with the sun to do it all over again today, our last long day on the road for a while.
We sipped our liquid addiction with neither shame nor ego as the sunrise made the steamy morning farmland blush. I took us as far as some rest stop in the middle of nowhere, or, the middle of everywhere, as the locals might say.
After Steven took us through Cleveland, we finally, FINALLY, listened to ‘Graceland’!
David and Nancy like to tease that all the tracks sound the same, and I’m quite certain Steven silently agrees, but I definitely saw some joyful finger-tappin’ at the wheel.
The car was even more thrilled with the next musical treat; it was time to listen to some REO Speedwagon.
I have most of their mainstream hits in my library, but it didn’t take long before a conclusion was made...that with the proper tweaking of a word or two, we were one hundred percent listening to Christian Rock.
Thanks. Steven. “Can’t Fight This Feeling Anymore” is ruined. RUINED.
Although...
In fairness...
That assessment is painfully (and hysterically) correct and it didn’t help my case at all that the only Night Ranger songs I had were “Goodbye” and “Sister Christian”.
And so we powered on, clipping a corner of Pennsylvania and powering into New York state.
We stopped short of Buffalo to enjoy lunch at Hoaks on Lake Erie. The place has sat on that shoreline since 1949 and served up a monster fish sandwich, complete with a view of Canada. Highly recommend!
I’m afraid I’m starting to sound like a broken record here, keeping track of our route and eating habits but, as forewarned, we’re on a mission to get to the lake.
Nearly there...
